রতনতনু ঘাটীর জন্ম ১৯৫৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দের ৩০ জুন অবিভক্ত মেদিনীপুর জেলার মহিষাদল থানার রাজারামপুর গ্রামে। বাংলা সাহিত্য নিয়ে স্নাতকোত্তর পড়াশোনা কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে। ১৯৮২ খ্রিস্টাব্দে সাংবাদিক হিসেবে কর্মজীবন শুরু। ১৯৮৪ খ্রিস্টাব্দ থেকে আনন্দবাজার পত্রিকা-র সঙ্গে চাকরিসূত্রে যুক্ত ছিলেন। ২০১৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দে ‘আনন্দমেলা’ পত্রিকার সহ-সম্পাদকের পদ থেকে অবসর গ্রহণ করেছেন। বড়োদের জন্যে কবিতা, গল্প, উপন্যাস লেখার পাশাপাশি ছোটোদের জন্যেও মনকাড়া ছড়া-কবিতা, গল্প, উপন্যাস লেখেন। এ পর্যন্ত তাঁর পঞ্চাশটিরও বেশি বই প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। প্রতিবেশী রাষ্ট্র বাংলাদেশ থেকে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে তাঁর দশটি কিশোর গ্রন্থ। ইংরেজি ভাষায় তাঁর লেখা অনূদিত হয়েছে। শিশুসাহিত্যে বিশিষ্ট অবদান হিসেবে তাঁর ‘কমিকস দ্বীপে টিনটিন’ কিশোর উপন্যাসের জন্যে পেয়েছেন পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকার কর্তৃক উপেন্দ্রকিশোর রায়চৌধুরী পুরস্কার, সমগ্র শিশুসাহিত্যের জন্যে পেয়েছেন দ্য এশিয়াটিক সোসাইটি এবং পারুল প্রকাশনীর যৌথ শিশুসাহিত্য পুরস্কার, শিশুসাহিত্যের জন্যে পেয়েছেন হলদিয়া পৌরসভা কর্তৃক নাগরিক সংবর্ধনা, এ ছাড়া পেয়েছেন মেদিনীপুর রত্ন সম্মান, শুভম বুকস শিশুসাহিত্য পুরস্কার ছাড়াও আরও অনেক পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন।
